There are reports indicate Microsoft wants developers and third-party publishers to provide free Smart Delivery.
VGC has recently reported, Microsoft has a renewed next-gen policy. Moreover, the studio wants its affiliates to operate the Smart Delivery principal for free. On the other hand, the decision to support Smart Delivery is at the hands of the studios. Therefore, studios like EA can still hold their own programs. For instance, EA decided to restrict the free upgrades to digital versions of their games. As a part of their Dual Entitlement program, EA will upgrade Madden 21 and FIFA 21 games, if the purchase happens before 22nd games.
However, Microsoft wants the transition to take place, free of charge. Therefore, the studio has already outspoken its wishes with the affiliates. Microsoft officially recognises EA’s Dual Entitlement. Furthermore, the studio allows the freedom to create such programs. Finally, Microsoft will not interfere with the physical sales. Yet, the reports indicate, Microsoft encourages discounts and vouchers for upgrades.
Currently, there are several developers confirmed free next-gen upgades. Cyberpunk 2077, Destiny 2 and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will join EA’s games in the endeavour. Yet not everybody is on this bandwagon. For instance, 2K will sell both versions of NBA 2K21 separately.
